John Griffin

John studied undergraduate Physics at the University of Warwick and obtained his PhD from the same university in 2008. After this, he joined the group of Professor Sharon Ashbrook at the University of St Andrews as a post-doc working on the development of NMR methods for the study of inorganic materials. In 2012, John moved to the University of Cambridge to join the group of Professor Dame Clare Grey FRS working on NMR studies of energy storage devices. In 2015 he was appointed Lecturer in Materials Chemistry at Lancaster University and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2020 and Professor in 2023.

Post-docs

Dr Kieran Griffiths

Kieran completed his PhD on molecular magnets at the University of Sussex before moving to Lancaster to carry out a post-doc in the group. His main research interests are the synthesis and characterisation porous materials for energy applications.

Students

Tommy Whewell

Tommy's PhD project is part of the Material Social Futures doctoral training centre, which aims to bridge the gap between materials research and the impacts upon society, also looking at how these two areas intersect. Tommy is studying organic energy materials (such as lithium-ion battery materials, ferroelectric materials and phosphorescent materials) using NMR Crystallography.

Originally from South Staffordshire, Tommy completed an MChem at Bangor University, before taking a year out in industry working with gas chromatography of natural gas. In his spare time, he is likely to be found planning his next overseas adventure, hiking with his young Jack Russell Terrier, attending live music shows and practicing either guitar or graphic design.

Sarah McKinney

Sarah is a joint PhD student between the Griffin at Lancaster and the Tapia Ruiz Group at Imperial. She is originally from Glasgow, Scotland and graduated from the University of St. Andrews in 2020 with an MChem (Honours) with External Placement. In her spare time she enjoys reading and cooking.

Chris Cook

Chris studied for his MChem at Lancaster University, where he stayed to carry out his PhD under the supervision of Dr John Griffin and Dr Nuria Tapia-Ruiz in collaboration with Prof. Rob Short. His project is looking at plasma polymer coatings for extending the life of battery electrodes.

Ryan Bragg

Ryan obtained his MChem in Chemistry at Lancaster University before staying here to study for a PhD. His PhD project is focused on understanding ion and solvent adsorption in porous carbons for energy and water desalination applications.
